Tips for Caregivers

Go on a word hunt. Before reading, flip through the pages and ask your child to spot items they recognize. Say the word in both languages and repeat it together.

Connect it to real life.After reading, take a trip to your own local bodega or grocery store and point out the same items — fruits, sandwiches, pan dulce, paletas.

Use the story as a birthday starter. Ask your child what they’d get for a loved one’s birthday, and let them “shop” for it in the book.

Practice new vocabulary slowly. With 100+ words, don’t try to cover them all in one sitting. Pick a few favorites each read and build from there.

Encourage code-switching.  If your child mixes English and Spanish while talking about the book, that’s a healthy sign of bilingual development, not something to correct.

Let Lola’s curiosity lead. Ask open-ended questions like “What do you think Lola will find next?” to build prediction and comprehension skills.
